FIFA World Cup 2014 | World Champion Special | Summer Courses | Students' Corner
Hello Friend Newsletter in EnglishNewsletter auf Deutsch

It was a terrific World Cup! And that’s not just coming from the German perspective, because in spite of all the advance criticism, Brazil turned out to be an outstanding World Cup host. The tournament was well organized and the broadcasts from each of the different venues provided viewers with fascinating glimpses into the Brazilian culture and way of life that reached far beyond the soccer field.

World Champion Special Unbeatable, though, was the spirit of the Brazilian fans as they supported their Brazilian national team, the so-called Seleção, with their wildly shaking maracas. The fans even remained friendly when they were unexpectedly defeated by Germany in the semifinals. Of course, we celebrated the victory here in Germany, but above all, we were extremely impressed by the fairness of the Brazilian people.

Naturally, the World Cup also made for great excitement here at did deutsch-institut. This summer, teenagers and adults from over 80 countries are learning German here with us at did deutsch-institut. Outings to public viewing venues to watch World Cup games were regularly found on the free-time excursion programs in many of our course locations, including Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg und Munich.

The highlight was the final game, of course, which took place on July 13, 2014 in the legendary Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Before the kickoff, Shakira and a host of other world-famous stars delivered a glorious closing show. Then it was finally time – Germany against Argentina - a classic match-up, which would once again guarantee an exciting night of soccer.

Students' Corner:
Why Frankfurt?

Mehdi from Iran: "I have many friends who work and study in Frankfurt. This is why I chose this city. I found that the did deutsch-institut in Frankfurt suited me well as it is very conveniently located. The website peeked my curiosity and I quickly received the information I needed. My time in Frankfurt? At first it was difficult without any knowledge of German, but now I feel more secure and I would really like to stay here. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I wouldn't want to do without it anymore." Read more
