Hello Friend Newsletter in EnglishNewsletter auf Deutsch

The years to come will soon be known as the “Brazilian Years”. With the World Cup taking place in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio, Brazil isn’t just catching the attention of sports fans these days. The largest country in South America is “in vogue” in many ways and is finding itself the center of worldwide attention – as an industrial and business center, a vacation destination and a nation of culture.

Street-Art Brazil Those who would like to experience more of the vibrant Brazilian art scene need not travel to the other end of the world. This October, Frankfurt is offering an art experience of a special kind - Street-Art Brazil: oversized murals appearing on bank towers, bridge pylons and churches make Brazilian street art accessible throughout the entire city.

On the occasion of the World Cup host country’s appearance at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair, the Kunsthalle Schirn (art gallery) presents the diversity of Brazilian graffiti art for the first time in Germany. This art form has come to signify São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro just as much as traffic jams and hustle-bustle. Discovering the massive artworks is a special experience.

Interest in the “other” culture is not unidirectional in this case. The number of Brazilian students learning German at our institutes has risen steadily in recent years. As much as it pleases our docents at the did deutsch-institut Frankfurt to lead tours of the Street-Art Brazil project, it pleases our language students from Brazil even more to be able to present the street art of their home country.

Students’ Corner:
Why Berlin

Marciano from Brazil: “I come from Itapiranga, a small city in Brazil where many German Brazilians live. As a child, I spoke only German with my family and it wasn’t until I first went to school that I learned Portuguese. For five semesters, I’ve been studying veterinary medicine in Brazil. Now I’ve received a scholarship and will study at a university in Germany for two semesters when I’m finished with my German course at did deutsch-institut Berlin. I’m really looking forward to it.” Read more
