25 Years Fall of Berlin Wall | Price Overview 2015 | Second UED Award | Students' Corner
Hello Friend Newsletter in EnglishNewsletter auf Deutsch

For 28 years, the Berlin Wall separated the German capital into east and west and became the symbol of a divided Germany. And it has been almost equally as long since the wall was opened as a result of political changes on the evening of November 9, 1989. That momentous event enabled the reunification of Germany and the abolition of the longstanding divisions in Europe.

Fall of the Wall Because of a slip of the tongue during a press conference being broadcast live on television and radio, the Wall was accidentally opened on the evening of November 9, 1989. In a very short time, thousands of individuals from the eastern part of the city set themselves in motion towards West Berlin and were not stopped by the border patrol. People from east and west celebrated a magic moment in history.

On November 9, 2014, the high point of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall will be the twelve-kilometer long light installation "Lichtgrenze" (Light Border), which will lead through the inner city along the former path of the wall. Citizens and visitors are invited to walk along the streets and plazas that were formerly divided. Of course, we will also be taking our students on a tour along the "Lichtgrenze".

And those who can’t be in Berlin during the days surrounding the 9th of November, 2014, will still be able to experience and learn about the division of Germany through our year-round excursion program. After all, from did deutsch-institut Berlin you can reach the Berlin Wall Memorial in less than ten minutes on foot, where an intact section of the original border fortifications can still be seen.

Students' Corner:
Why Frankfurt?

Varshan from Tadzhikistan: "It can be said that German occupies first place when it comes to scientific languages. And it is the same in medicine. I am a physician by profession and would like to begin a career in medicine in Germany. That is why I am learning German. My colleagues recommended did deutsch-institut to me, in order to learn German quickly and effectively. Now I see that they were speaking the truth. It is a qualified institution that enjoys a very good reputation among German colleges and German universities." Read more
