Christmas Markets | Starting Dates 2010 | TestDaF Courses | Facebook | Students' Corner
Dear Friend,

At this time of the year a sweet smell of almonds, gingerbread, and cinnamon is in the air... It's advent season again and a perfect moment to visit the home country of Christmas markets. Located in the heart of the four major cities Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich did deutsch-institut offers you a unique opportunity to learn German in the run up to Christmas.
Advent Season in Germany
Berlin has around 60 traditional Christmas markets with cultural events, endless shopping opportunities and unusual winter attractions. Get into the Christmas spirit at evocative festive concerts, or on the historical and world-famous Gendarmen markt square.

Frankfurt's Christmas market is one of the oldest (1393) and prettiest in Germany. It attracts more than three million people every year from all over the world. On Römerberg square 200 stalls offer arts, crafts and seasonal food and drink. A wide range of entertainment around the 30-meter Christmas tree includes concerts and trumpet fanfares from the balcony of St. Nicholas's Church.

Discover history, tradition and Hanseatic heritage at Hamburg's wonderful Christmas markets, which fill many of the city center squares. The prettiest is set up outside the impressive town hall and hosted by Roncalli's Circus, with lovingly decorated stalls that are laden with confectionery, toys, crafts and punch. Old-fashioned carousels bring a gleam to everyone's eyes.

Stroll around Munich's traditional Christmas market on Marienplatz square and find everything you could want and more. For Nativity scenes, head to the Kripperlmarkt, one of the largest of its kind in the world. There is live music every day on the town hall balcony. Discover the meaning of words such as Kletznbrot and Fatschnkindl on did deutsch-institut's cultural tours.
